And Philippines, I believe, shares a beautiful culture of love for music. Filipinos are known for their musical talents in both singing and dancing. I thought THAT in itself, was good enough a reason to come here.
But I had no idea that they drove on the other side of the road like the Americans do. I was so fascinated that I could hardly breathe when I realised this as we were driving (or rather, the bus driver was) from Clark to Manila.
The views of the countryside on the bus ride reminded me of the hills of Adelaide. Spectacular. When I saw my first jeepney, I broke into a laugh. I felt like Ian Wright from Globe Trekker on a real adventure. One fit for the world to see.
And now I know that Manila is the place to go if you love shopping. The malls here are massive! Levels and levels of shopping and the customer service here is exceptional. Greenbelt 3 is a must-go. Impressively designed with a serene garden built in the centre of the mall and a Catholic church right beside the garden.
Some of the things here are ridiculously cheap. On average, for a good quality comfy pair of locally-made sandals, it costs about AUD$4. I kid you not. And there are so many to choose from. We spent at least four hours sandal shopping yesterday.
And I bought a Maccas meal which consisted of two juicy pieces of chicken, curly fries and a coke for less than AUD$5. They also have Krispy Kremes here. And the best yoghurt ice-cream.
My friend J whom I have not seen in six years welcomed me to stay with her and her family while my sister and I were here. And they have been most hospitable. J's mum who is also my god-mother is such a charismatic lady. I always feel comfortable around her. With her, I get this indescribable feeling of security. The world outside does not seem as scary just because I know that there are people like her.
And she has been cooking so much for us. Yum-meh...
J helped arrange a full body oil massage for us since we were staying in today (knackered from all the shopping yesterday) and about half an hour after she called, two masseuses arrived. One hour later of pure heavenly massage, my sister asked how much it cost and was told PHP300. That is less than AUD$10! We are so going to have another massage but this time, it will be for two hours.
Here's to Manila!
I am glad to know that you have made it to Manila alive and kicking!!! Well done Mon!
